ARCHITECTURE AS A SYNTHESIS OF THE ART

Book Cover spacer

Relevant to students of architecture, the arts, social science, or anybody seeking deeper spiritual understanding, this collection of key lectures introduces Rudolf Steiner's unique vision of architecture as a synthesis or culmination of the arts. Such an architecture unites sculpture, painting and engraving as well as drama, music and dance - a vital synthesis of all the arts working in cooperation out of a common ideal to awaken each human being to his or her unique self and task in life.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, however, Steiner's ideas did not remain abstract. Within his lifetime he was able to design and construct a number of buildings, including his architectural masterpiece, the Goetheanum - a centre for culture and the arts near Basle, Switzerland. In these lectures Steiner describes, with reference to the Goetheanum, the importance of an architecturally coherent and integrated community, and how this in turn affects social unity and harmony. The visual arts have the task of transforming our consciousness and building a vibrant new society. In words highly relevant for our time, he states that good architecture has the potential for preventing crime and disorder in a way that the criminal law system can never do!

The lectures also offer a panoramic picture of the development of architecture in parallel with the emerging human soul in mankind's evolution.
